今年2017开始，美国大学网申Common App Essay題目与以往不太一样，字数限制依旧维持在650字，但题目数量增加至七个。 其中大多数的题目核心都是申请者透过个人亲身经验而获得的个人成长，但较为特别的是其中有一题允许自由发挥。

#1. Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.
- 破题技巧: 如果你选择说明你热衷的事物，请解释追求所喜爱事物的过程如何影响你，让你成为一个更成熟的人，一个能在大学环境中游刃有余且持续参与活动的人。如果你选择Background或identifty，一样想想这些事情如何影响自己现在的想法跟行动。
#4. Describe a problem you’ve solved or a problem you’d like to solve. It can be an intellectual challenge, a research query, an ethical dilemma—anything that is of personal importance, no matter the scale. Explain its significance to you and what steps you took or could be taken to identify a solution.

- 注意: 大家常犯的一个错误是，在申请文提到了一个问题，却没有进而说明为什么这个问题对自己很重要。例如，你选择了全球暖化问题，但招生委员不是真的想了解你计画如何解决全球暖化，而是为什么你这么在乎全球暖化(即你的动机)与根据你个人经验，为什么你认为其问题有重视的必要性。最后，essay内容必须能反映出你知识成长与情感成长的内容。

#2. The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?

#3. Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? What was the outcome?
- 题目重点着重于一个你可能没有采取行动但内心觉得冲突的情况，更重要的是，题目从「为什么这样做?」换成「冲突在第一时间是如何形成的?」，换句话说，招生人员希望听到关于某个信念或想法如何促使你批判性思考，形成自己的观点。

#5. Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.

#6. Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time. Why does it captivate you? What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more?
- 这个题目在Common App essay当中是相当有趣的，我们认为这个题目的目的是为了鼓励你大方说出你最热衷事物。透过分享你最热爱的事物，招收委员可以了解到你的真实面、你好奇的东西与你如何满足自己的好奇欲望。请务必完整解释你热衷的事物，毕竟所有事情都有正反面。以下提供几点思考方向:
- Are there any drawbacks to your high curiosity for this topic?
- Have you ever hit any roadblocks while pursuing this topic? If so, how did you resolve them?
- How do you restrain yourself when you feel you’re diving in too deep and losing all sense of time and engagement with the outside world? Or, does that not even matter to you?
- If you’re so fascinated by a topic, to what extremes have you gone to pursue it? Have you had to make sacrifices along the way? How did those situations change you?

#7. Share an essay on any topic of your choice. It can be one you’ve already written, one that responds to a different prompt, or one of your own design.
- 虽然这个题目听起来很有趣，但我们想提醒一些注意事项。有些人可能会认为可以改写以前的论文，然而这篇文章的目的是介绍自己。也就是说，你挑选的主题必须符合下列其中一项：

- 注意： 不要提到在校成绩，考试成绩或其他在申请流程中你提交的其他内容。是让你分享真实的一面，这是从文件中的数字看不出来的。同样地，如果你改写另一篇之前为了其他用途而写的一篇文章，建议你要修改以改进并增加其他资讯让招生委员更容易了解你是谁。

- Stanford: Virtually all of Stanford’s undergraduates live on campus. Write a note to your future roommate that reveals something about you or that will help your roommate—and us—know you better.
- University of Chicago: Alice falls down the rabbit hole. Milo drives through the tollbooth. Dorothy is swept up in the tornado. Neo takes the red pill. Don’t tell us about another world you’ve imagined, heard about, or created. Rather, tell us about its portal. Sure, some people think of the University of Chicago as a portal to their future, but please choose another portal to write about.
